<span style="color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre-wrap;">By Thursday, their third session of coding, students were able to share real-life examples of coding. When Mrs. Berkheim asked for examples of coding that they saw at home, many students shared ideas such as refrigerator, coffee pot, television remote, programmable toys.

Through the time I was there, I heard several students use troubleshoot, command, sequence, clear, action, and other coding terms. Not only did they use the terms, but they performed the actions that they were talking about.

I was recently able to use the online tool Kahoot when facilitating some professional learning. I had heard about the tool over a year ago but never tool the chance of using it when leading a session. The feedback I received from the use of the tool was extremely positive. Users were incredibly engaged with the experience and had tons of fun while going through a simple quiz game I had created. There was laughter and excitement which made the learning fun and interesting. I found it incredibly easy to use the tool and engage my audience which provided an atmosphere of genuine learning.

Kahoot is a simple and easy to use tool in any learning environment. You can sign up for free and create assessments quickly and easily which is a crucial component to any learning environment. Kahoot works on any device with internet access including all mobile devices. One of my favorite features is the ease of use for participants. There is no need for them to create accounts to participate. Each "game" or activity that you create has a special pin and the only thing your participants need to get started is to enter the game pin and their name. Another great feature is the ability to override or "veto" any inappropriate or misused names. If any participants enter names that aren't correct or are inappropriate, you can immediate reject them and they are dismissed from the game.

It's incredibly easy to get started with Kahoot. This VIDEO allows you to get started using Kahoot in under 3 minutes so there's no need to worry about spending hours learning a new tool. You'll need to visit getkahoot.com to sign up and create your first game/assessment as well as facilitate it. Your participants will go to kahoot.com to play and enter the game pin. I created my first interactive experience with Kahoot in about 15 minutes and we were off and running. Participants earn points for correct responses but it doesn't end there. Points are also awarded for how fast they respond which means the element of competition is very clearly present at all points of the game. The person who responds first gets the most points awarded and so on. I loved watching the looks on participant faces as they worked to respond as quickly as possible with the correct answer. After each question a summary of the leader board is displayed allowing the competition to grow even stronger. Life involves competition and participants love fun, friendly competition so let's incorporate more opportunities in our learning environments.

Kahoot will provide instant feedback to the participants in terms of right or wrong answers. It also will provide you a summary of participant responses to each question so you can easily collect great data to reflect on at a later time or when the game is finished. The data can be downloaded as an excel spreadsheet for easy analysis or you can also save it directly to Google Drive if you prefer to utilize your Googliciousness. Either way, you can have access to instant data and make real-time instructional decisions to support your learners. You can even replay any of your previous Kahoot's at anytime so learners can challenge themselves to beat their previous score(s).

The next time you're thinking about assessing learners or want to have a conversation with them that involves data collection, check out Kahoot and watch the engagement soar. Learning can be fun and Kahoot is one simple tool to bring the fun and engagement into your learning environment. If you have questions or would like support with additional strategies for utilizing Kahoot in your instructional practice, contact your APS EdTech Coach. It will certainly be a hoot!
Two years ago when Google Classroom was first released, I was very excited to share it with teachers because of the ease in which documents could be distributed, shared, and collected. Although Google Classroom was a great tool, there were limitations. Fortunately, Google for Education has been very responsive to teacher requests and continues to make updates and improvements.

Several updates to Google Classroom were released in August. I wanted to highlight a some of those updates here.

Guardian Summaries
One of the common requests I have heard is the need for parents to access Google Classroom. There is now a feature named Guardian Summaries in which teachers can invite guardians to sign up for email summaries so that they can keep up with student progress. Summaries include student's missing work, upcoming due dates as well as announcements and questions posted by the teacher. Guardians can choose when they receive a summary daily or weekly. The can also choose to unsubscribe at any time. Sample Guardian Summary.
When creating an assignment, teachers now have the option to organize the class stream by adding topics to their posts. Next to the due date is a spot for topic. Teachers can type a new topic or select from a previously used topic. Then students or teachers can filter the stream by topic.

As an ed tech coach, I am often asked questions about limiting internet access for students. “Can we block youtube?” “How do we block this game site?” “We need to block facebook.” APS has a progressive view on site availability: we recognize that there can be excellent academic and relationship building reasons to leave social media sites accessible by all and we also know that shutting off one game site just means another game site is discovered the next week.

BUT...I empathize with the questions. It's understandable that teachers and principals might want limits on availability. Students finding ways to spend their entire class time on youtube searching for music videos instead of researching the Civil War is frustrating - and the least scary thing about open access. Cyber-bullying, violent or sexually graphic images and videos, and child predators on internet sites aimed at children are infinitely more concerning.

So what can we do about sites like youtube - which can have both excellent resources for students and teachers AND truly objectionable material?

Some teachers have a hard and fast rule regarding where students go on the internet. It’s some variation of, “If you are anywhere other than ___, I’m taking up your chromebook.” I totally get this stance. Teachers deal with hundreds of things in a typical hour long lesson and with a rule like this, teachers that interact with students in class can keep their students on the desired site effectively.

BUT…I wonder about two things:

1. Is this just compliance? Are students engaged in the work or are they simply staring at the screen, doing no deep thinking? I would argue that with this management policy, students may only be engaged behaviorally, leaving behind affective and cognitive engagement - and thus, leaving behind rigor and relevance.

2. We don’t pick up the notebooks and pens from students when they aren’t doing their assigned work. We don’t take away their textbook. What message are we sending if we take away their chromebook/ipad/laptop/phone?

Sometimes, building compliance skills in our children is crucial. Physical safety comes to mind. You teach a two year old to not touch the stove, to not handle knives, to not go out in the street. You don’t spend a lot of time trying to explain why; the typical two year old isn’t capable of reason and their life safety depends on compliance.

Compliance in the classroom is more nuanced. We still need students to follow rules, but we also want student buy-in. Buy-in v. compliance in a 3rd grade classroom may look different when compared to the same in a 9th grade classroom, but it’s a crucial piece in the culture of every classroom.

AND SO:

How might we scaffold self-management skills for our students?

I’ve been struggling with this idea for a while now. I’m a neophyte twitter user and I tweeted out a variation or two on the subject but got no replies. Wholly aware that I’m a twitter noob, I thought the reason my questions didn’t generate any interest is because either a) no one else has the question b) the answer is so obvious that no one wants to get into a discussion about it or c) something is wrong with my twitter account. I was leaning heavily towards either a or b, but then I saw a tweet from Richard Wells - “How do we scaffold self-management?” I followed that discussion, and there were some great thoughts - break it into small chunks and help students identify behaviors from Jacque Allen, set mini goals within the student’s zone of proximal development from Barend Blom.

As a concrete thinker, I immediately jumped to what these ideas would look like in a classroom. I broached the subject with Kevin Reibau and he told me aboutStackUp. A colleague of ours, Noah Geisel, took a few minutes the other day to show me some of the cool stuff this Chrome extension can do. I think it can be a part of the scaffolding of self-management for students - not as a replacement for relationship building, setting goals and reflecting on progress with students but as a non-invasive and digital way of producing data for students so they know exactly how much time they spent on instagram instead of on the History Channel.

At the very least, it lets me know just how far I fell into the seemingly never-ending time suck of facebook or Inside Texas - my Longhorn Football fix.

Anyone else using a tool like StackUp with students? Have other ideas about helping students make good choices when it comes to using the internet for learning?

A note from Jan Parker: this blog post was originally published on my personal blog and while my teammates and I have similar views on this topic, there are shades of gray. I expressed my opinion here in the hopes of starting a rich conversation around these ideas.

Film/video is a passion for students of all ages. Through film production, students gain access to a wide variety of 21st century skills that prepare them for their futures. Along with those skills, students are able to explore their interests while voicing their opinions and views about the world in which they live. Student film is an opportunity for everyone to hear about the ways in which students interpret the world and solutions they possess to some of the world's problems. It can also be a great way to understand their thinking and allow us to tap into the things that drive their desires and dreams so that we can hopefully support their efforts and achievements.

On May 11, 2016 Aurora Public Schools will host its first annual student film festival the "Aurora Borealis". The film festival will provide an opportunity for APS students to showcase their film production talents. The festival is open to all students in APS who have a desire to write, capture, produce, and edit their own short films, videos, or commercials.

The festival will be an Academy Awards of sorts to recognize and highlight the work of students within the district this year. Anyone is welcome to attend the event and view the student work while engaging in the socializing that will be present at the event. Light refreshments will be served along with opportunities to connect with various students, parents, teachers, district personnel, and community partners.

Flubaroo is a google add-on tool for google sheets that will automatically grade submissions based on the criteria that are set by the teacher. It's an extremely popular add-on. In its first iteration, it was a tool that worked best just with multiple choice or single word text/number questions. Recently it has undergone improvements that make it much more student-centered and teacher-friendly.

You can now "hand-grade" student short answers and leave specific feedback without leaving the window - a huge time-saver for teachers. In addition to that, and even better than that - flubaroo now includes an option to send the quiz to your student's google drive.

Why is this so cool? Because now your students can have the copy of the quiz questions, their answers, and your feedback on a single google doc in their drive. No left-behind quiz sheets, no crumpled and thrown in the trash paper. The commenting feature of google docs allows the quiz to be the start of the conversation, not the end.

Below is a short overview of the improved features in action. If you are new to flubaroo, take a look at the other videos below to get you up to speed. As always, consider this an open invitation to contact your friendly ed tech coach for more support.
Socratic Circles are a great way to engage students around a provocative question - students are engaged with the topic, encouraged to think about complex topics with a critical eye, and inspired to explore big ideas.

However, it can be a challenge to give all students a voice in a Socratic Circle that is 30+ students big...there are time, space, and personality constraints that sometimes mean the conversation is dominated by just a few voices.

By leveraging digital tools, you can mitigate these constraints and give all of your students a voice - thus giving all students the opportunity to explore their own thinking as well as their classmate's.

We recently had the good fortune to be able to spend some time at Wheeling Elementary in 4th and 5th grade classrooms using chromebooks in this manner.

The Socratic Circles were set up as inner and outer circles, with the inner circle being students participating in the usual way - responding to each other's thoughts without talking over each other, using respectful discourse. The outer circle students were using their chromebooks to respond to the discussion via the discussion feature in google classroom.

The engagement of the students in both circles was high, every student had a voice, and the ability for each group to function at a higher level was increased: the inner circle discussion was more robust because of the smaller number of participants, the outer circle discussion was lively and engaged because they could respond to the discussion in real time, instead of having to wait until the inner circle finished to share their thoughts.

Take a look:

When teachers are able to save time on foundational components of student writing, they are able to focus on supporting students with development of higher level literacy skills. Google Docs is a great tool and being used by many teachers, however, it can be time consuming to add comments on every Google Doc for every student.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It wasn't until I became a teacher that I began to annotate texts with real purpose. The pressure of being prepared for class after class of energetic 12 year olds drove me to read professional literature and young adult literature with a new focus and purpose. At the same time I was learning about how annotation helped me develop my professional practice, I also learned how annotation could support my students in making meaning in the texts they encountered in my class. In teaching I learned the authentic value of talking back to a text with annotations.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Still, though we shared our annotations in discussion, the act of annotating was an independent act that we did alone, while we read silently. Even in guided reading settings, we'd annotate segments of text individually before talking through those texts one segment at a time. The Internet, with its interactive opportunities and Web 2.0 applications, suggest a more social approach, and present an opportunity for teachers and students alike to consider the possibilities for annotating together. In pairs, in interest-powered groups and yes, oh yes, in crowds.
My favorite annotation from the flash mob

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In my favorite "annotation discussion thread" that resulted from our flash mob a teacher- kschmidt39- asked how she might use a group feature to engage her class in some private, class-level collaborative annotation. Another participant, my brother Jason annotating live from Salvador, Brazil, chimed in with a classroom application for collaborative annotation. kschmidt39, rather than sticking on her technical questions, engaged in back-and-forth about pedagogy. At the end of this organically developing thread, Terry Elliott popped in to solve the technical question.

But I still don't know what it means

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In the hours before the annotation flash mob started, I looked at my bookshelf for the books I had marked up most in order to reflect on the annotation I do for authentic purposes. I found Sheridan Blau's The Literature Workshop and Peter Johnston's Choice Words and tried to get some workable photographs of how I annotated them. Not pictured above are the giant, expensive sticky notes I used to annotate Blau's book at the end of each chapter. They're big and pink and covered with my excited ideas about teaching. In Johnston's case, my aforementioned brother recently borrowed this to take to a conference where he was presenting and wanted to share it as a resource text. He rolled his eyes when I refused to let him clean up my copy by taking out the sticky notes that are now slightly mangled and torn where they stick out of the book. I assured him that his participants would appreciate my personal process when they turned the well-worn pages.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My crappy photography of these two heavily annotated books revealed something else to me: I prized these texts because they contain thoughtful insights that fed my appetite for professional learning and because they each transcribed the learning interactions that they either created or observed in order to make perfectly concrete what powerful classroom discourse- learning discourse- looks and sounds like.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Skimming through these familiar texts I thought about the potential for social annotation. One important possibility I see for collaborative annotation is the opportunity to structure learning conversations about texts that produce transcripts of written discourse that we can see, study and learn from. In the same ways Johnston and Blau think we ought to be able to learn from knowing exactly what discourse sounds like in the classrooms that inhabit their books, I think there is something to learn by engaging in text-centered discourse and then looking back at the digital footprint that results.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Instead of drawing conclusions at this early juncture in the history of annotation flash mobs, I'll stick to naming and noticing, a practice for which Johnston would advocate. I did a little of this above and I can also do this with screencasts on YouTube. In that way, even in this state of sense-making I can model for others how I'm seeking to identify the potential of what we're doing in the margins when we gather as a mob to annotate together.

Super Quiz is a great new formative assessment tool that has just been released. Super Quiz is an Add-On for Google Sheets that quickly creates data and statistical displays of any student responses. Flubaroo has been another popular grading tool for Google Forms & Sheets for a long time and now there's another option that teachers can choose from. With Super Quiz, you don't need to wait for data on your students, you can instantly get breakdowns that will allow you to make quick instructional decisions and support struggling students.

Super Quiz can be easily added onto any Google Sheet by clicking "Add-Ons" at the top and selecting "Get Add-Ons" from the dropdown menu. Simply search for Super Quiz and complete the install process. Once Super Quiz has been installed, you can run it by returning to the add-ons menu. Super Quiz takes less than 90 seconds to complete and will provide you will a great data breakdown of all the responses.

There are a few requirements you'll need to pay close attention to in order to get Super Quiz to run effectively. Your spreadsheet must be titled "Form Responses 1" which is the default for any Google Sheet that has been created from a Google Form. The only other requirement is that the first 4 columns of the Sheet are titled: Timestamp, Username, Name, and Teacher. You can easily achieve this by using these headings for the first four questions on your Google Form.

Once you run Super Quiz, you'll find a variety of tabs added to your spreadsheet. You'll find "Right & Wrong" which breaks down all the correct and incorrect answers. There's "Class Results" which will allow you to view data by class if you have multiple classes taking the same assessment, "Incorrect Students", "Response Feedback", "Topic Score Breakdown", "Charts" and more. You may not use all the tabs for each assessment but they are easily accessible when you need them which can make the instructional decision making process quick and easy.

The Chrome Extension called "Language Immersion for Google Chrome" is a free service that changes a certain number of words on a website, blog, etc to any one of 64 languages Google currently translates.

It's easy to install and has five settings (novice to fluent) to differentiate the difficulty for the learner.

At the novice level, a few phrases in each paragraph appear in the chosen second language. At the fluent level, entire paragraphs are translated. On top of that, the translated phrases are highlighted and toggle on click between English and the translated language. The extension works on any webpage that is not https - generally, any webpage that is not password protected or requires a log-in.

It's a perfect fit in a world languages classroom, but it could also be useful in an ELD classroom. In a beginning French class for example, set the immersion level to "novice." In an ELD class, have the learner set their native language as the one to be translated to, and set the immersion to "fluent."
Being able to differentiate assignments in Google Classroom is an oft-requested feature. We know that differentiation done well is one path to creating an equitable learning environment for all of our students.

Currently, there are work-arounds such as attaching multiple versions of a google doc and directing students on which assignment to choose or using a google sheet add-on such as Doctopus to manage the differentiation. But like most work-arounds, those choices come with an added layer of complexity for the teacher and/or the student.

How about a solution that's quick, easy, and most importantly, instantly responsive to the student's needs in the moment?

Erich Ball, Social Studies teacher at Aurora Hills Middle School, came up with a method he has termed "Scaffold-Blasting."

Here's how he described the process to me:

Say you are working on the gradual release of your students - asking them to do more of the thinking instead of giving them a full outline to follow when approaching a writing assignment. Erich creates a document that does just that and then assigns it in google classroom. Then, when he sees the few students that are struggling to get started, Erich goes into that student's google doc from google classroom and pastes additional help right into their document - maybe more structure, maybe a couple of questions to get the student thinking, whatever would give that student a bit of support.

Brilliant in its simplicity and uber-responsive to his student's needs, Scaffold-Blasting gives all students equitable access to the content and learning AND ensures rigor for all. Great classroom transformations being made possible by 21st century technologies. Love it!
In partnership with the Colorado Avalanche, Everfi has released a powerful new tool to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning. This new tool is entirely free and web-based so it can be used on any device. It involves incredible interactions with the game of hockey from the engineering of skates to the area of the ice to finding angles of puck passes. It's also perfect for second language learners as it has great audio directions to accompany the text. If you are interested in using the great new tool to enhance student learning, check out the additional information below.

To get started with this great tool click HERE for instructions. You'll be able to create a free teacher account and select your school. Once you have created a free teacher account you can create classes and invite students with a simple class code. Your students will automatically be entered into the class once they enter the code and they can begin engaging with learning through hockey. As a teacher you'll receive reports on their progress enabling you to access incredible data to make instructional decisions or report on student progress.

Finally, if students aren't engaged by the activities and learning, the ultimate goal is to win the Stanley Cup. If students complete the modules with 80% or better proficiency, they'll be awarded lord Stanley's Cup as their prize. It's an excellent motivator for students of all ages. Although the program is designed for students in grades 4-7, it could very easily span grades 3-9 especially when it comes to the concepts of area and angle measurement. Take advantage of this tool with your students and if you have questions, contact your EdTech coach.
